High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At Cowra Public School, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

We are committed to developing high potential across 4 domains: creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional. We foster a culture of high expectations and excellence, ensuring every student has the opportunity to develop and realise their potential.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Our school offers a comprehensive classroom-level High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program designed to challenge and inspire students.

Through differentiated learning experiences, we provide opportunities for advanced thinking, creativity, and problem-solving across all key learning areas.

Our teachers tailor lessons to extend students’ strengths and interests, fostering a supportive environment where gifted learners can thrive academically and personally.

This approach ensures that every student is engaged, motivated, and encouraged to reach their full potential

Across our school

Across our school, we are committed to supporting High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) through a whole-school approach.

Students are carefully identified using a range of assessment tools and teacher observations to ensure their unique learning needs are recognised.

Our teachers work collaboratively to provide tailored learning opportunities that challenge and extend students’ abilities across all key learning areas.

By fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independent learning, we aim to inspire and support gifted learners to achieve their highest potential in a nurturing and inclusive environment.

Across NSW

Across NSW schools, the Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program provides a structured and comprehensive approach to identifying and supporting gifted and high potential students.

Using the NSW DoE HPGE Toolkit, schools employ a variety of identification methods, including assessments, teacher referrals, and student evidence, to recognise diverse talents and learning needs.
